Rugby League - Girls

With the increasing growth of female participation within Queensland Rugby League, the NRL is committed to establishing female pathways with regional, state and elite representative opportunities. The Karyn Murphy Cup was launched in 2017 to offer females the opportunity to participate in a state-wide schools’ competition. The introduction of a Girls U16 Yrs Rugby League team was met with many of our Year 9 and 10 students excited at the prospect of playing Rugby League for the College.

Late in Term 1 2019 was the opener to the Girls’ Rugby League season with the Titans Schoolgirl Challenge hosted at Helensvale Hornets Rugby League Club. For many of our players these games were the first Rugby League experience and they did the Marymount community proud. The girls played against Varsity College, Merrimac SHS and St Francis College, Crestmead in the first three rounds of competition. Their final game for the day was against Varsity College again and the team finished the day undefeated in all four matches. Tries went to Zoe Riddell (5), Elle Sommerville (4), Lily-Rose Kolc (3), Lily Prendergast, Piper Stockell, Kahli Samuels (2) and Sarah Radler. The girls’ discipline and commitment on the field was commendable and the future for them is promising.

The Karyn Murphy Cup commenced in the first week of Term 2 2019. The format for this competition involved each team playing two games, of twelve-minute halves, every Wednesday evening. For the first six weeks of competition, the teams played a Round Robin format against Beenleigh SHS, Keebra SHS, Merrimac SHS and St Francis, Crestmead. During Week 7 of the competition, the seven teams were split into two pools, A and B, based on the results from pool games. Our U16 Yrs Girls finished in 3rd place out of the seven teams and were placed in Pool A trailing Keebra SHS and Beenleigh SHS. It then became a four-team race to sustain the top position on the ladder for the remaining two weeks of semi-finals. We were unlucky to go down to Beenleigh SHS 8-4 in the semi-final, meaning we were to face Merrimac SHS in the battle for 3rd/4th the following week. Our girls won this game 28 -16 finishing in 3rd place in the South Coast Region.

Our team Captain Zoe Riddell (Year 10), Vice-captain Lily Kolc (Year 9) and winger Elle Sommerville (Year 9) all nominated to trial for the South Coast regional team to play at the QLD State Championships at Carina in July. All three students made the final stage of the Possible/Probables’ games played later in the afternoon with both Lily and Zoe making selection in the U15 and U18 Yrs’ teams.

We look forward to next year’s Rugby League season with the prospect of entering in all three age divisions of the Titans Challenge and Karyn Murphy Cup.
